The biggest carbon sink on Earth is in the water

The Amazon rainforest? Renewable energies? All the forests in the world?

Nothing compared to the potential of our oceans, which process over 80% of the carbon that passes through our atmosphere.

Dedicated to life under water

COcean2 is a startup active in the effort to decarbonize our planet by promoting marine projects. Our motto is to be for and through the ocean.

The project was created in 2022 by two E4S students (EPFL HEC IMD) and also supported by the HUB entrepreneurship and innovation incubator of the University of Lausanne via the UCreate3 program.

"Biochar" the charcoal using as soil amendment made from agricultural waste.

Our Focus: Hydrochar

At present, COcean2 is dedicated to producing Biochar derived from aquatic sources. Biochar holds great promise for reducing carbon emissions in our environment and offers significant benefits in agriculture.

Hydrochar, a type of Biochar sourced from marine environments, is relatively underdeveloped at the moment.

Collaborative Research: Shaping the Future of Hydrochar

Our journey into the depths of Hydrochar research is a collaborative effort alongside the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (UNIL) and Agroscope.

Spanning from summer 2024 to summer 2025, this project aims to assess the quality and viability of Hydrochar, setting the stage for its integration into the carbon offset market. By harnessing the power of marine biomass, we aim to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
